Here are the before & after photos and some details on the most recent renovation we completed, the Newberg Bungalow. The Bungalow was the last home we purchased and sits next door to our Cottage, just one block from downtown Newberg’s main street.
After buying the cottage and starting the renovation, we discovered that we wouldn’t be able to rent it out as it didn’t have off-street parking. While we pondered selling it (after the renovation, we wouldn’t be able to rent it long-term and break even) the adorable bungalow next door went up for sale. With just enough lawn area between them to add a driveway, purchasing and renovating it seemed like the right thing to do. It was a win-win for both us and the community: we’d be bringing these two homes up-to-date and fixing some serious problems, improving the curb appeal, and providing sorely needed parking in the neighborhood.
before…
Built in 1927, it was a total charmer but in need of a ton of TLC. We had put an offer in sight unseen, and were a bit devastated when we were finally able to get out to tour in person: the upstairs “master bedroom” was actually an attic, with a 6’ ceiling only at the peak. It wasn’t legal or liveable, and definitely would need a lot of work to become an upscale rental accommodation.

After much deliberation, we decided to go all-in and lift the roof, restructure the whole second floor, and create a true master suite. We also had to completely renovate the rest of the home, adding central air conditioning, all new plumbing and electric, new kitchen, new downstairs bathroom, and all new finishes throughout. We kept as much original charm as we could – the original fir floors, the built-ins in the living room, the cozy little dining nook in the living room – while making every inch of the home functional for a modern lifestyle.
It’s our belief that having this level of comfort within walking distance of everything downtown Newberg has to offer made the extensive renovation work worth it – and, so far, our guests have agreed!
